Thomson Airways Update On Air Passenger Duty
The legislation on Air Passenger Duty for children has been amended. Here’s how this affects your travels…
**UPDATE** This post was amended on 16/03/16 to reflect the recent changes.
Air Passenger Duty (APD) Changes
Back in December 2014, the Chancellor, George Osborne, announced the abolishment of Air Passenger Duty (APD) for children under 12 travelling in Economy from May 2015, and for children under 16 from March 2016. It’s a move we’ve welcomed.
The new legislation affects package holidays, flight only and Cruise departures – that include Economy flights – from 1st May 2015. It doesn’t impact Accommodation Only and Premium Economy bookings.
We have been refunding any APD that’s no longer applicable for existing bookings, and have updated our Thomson and First Choice holiday prices. The final bookings affected by the APD change will receive an amended invoice or refund by March 2016. If you have any further queries, please contact our Contact Centre team on 0203 451 2688.
What is APD?
APD is a UK Government tax charged to all passengers departing from a UK airport. It’s currently £13 per person for a short-haul flight and £71 per person for long-haul, Egypt and Cape Verde flights.
Why am I being refunded?
In his autumn (2014) statement, the Chancellor announced the Government’s decision to abolish Air Passenger Duty (APD) for children aged between 2 and under 12 travelling from the UK in Economy from 1st May 2015, and children between 2 and under 16 from 1st March 2016.
Which bookings will be refunded?
Refunds apply to package holidays, flight only and Cruise departures – that include Economy flights – due to depart from the UK after 1st May 2015. It doesn’t apply to Accommodation Only and Premium Economy bookings. The refunds will be made according to the ages you entered for your child at the time of your booking and don’t apply to free child places.
How will I be refunded?
We’ll refund any APD no longer applicable on your booking. For bookings not yet fully paid for, your balance will be adjusted automatically. If you’ve already paid the full balance for your booking, you’ll be refunded, either onto the card you paid with, or by cheque.
When will I be refunded?
As of March 2016, all refunds and amendements are now complete.
Will you be charging an admin fee on refunds?
Will I receive a new invoice?
Yes you will receive a new invoice either via email or through the post, and this will show a new reduced total cost of your booking. If you have already received a final balance reminder please note the new reduced price will be the cost of your balance.
Will you be adjusting your prices for future bookings?
All pricing for future bookings has now been amended to reflect the new child APD legislation.
