Tick off two once-in-a-lifetime experiences by proposing in front of nature’s most dazzling night time phenomenon. The lights can be pretty hard to predict, but once you catch them there’s no better backdrop for that special moment. If you don’t manage to see them, Iceland is packed with plenty of other stunning natural sites including lakes, lagoons, glaciers and volcanoes.
You’re guaranteed to feel on top of the world when you’re 2,716 feet above ground, so it’s the perfect time to add a proposal into the mix. The observation deck on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa offers panoramic views across Dubai, and you’ll get a striking kaleidoscopic backdrop if you head up there just before sunset. Or, for an extra-special dining experience above the clouds, book a table at At.mosphere on the 122nd floor – it’s officially the world’s highest restaurant.
Couples that ski together stay together, right? If you’re both self-confessed ski bunnies, on top of the Alps is your must-propose spot. Although, for the purposes of ring safety, it’s probably best not to do it while you’re navigating the ski lift or hurtling down the slopes. One of the most romantic ski resorts is Alpbach in Austria which combines pretty tree-lined pistes with fairytale-style chalets. Lakes, castles, waterfalls and medieval towns are nearby, so you’ll be spoilt for those picture-book romantic locations.
Those who love Disney have plenty of alternative proposal options to the classic Cinderella castle. At the Coral Reef Restaurant in Epcot you can channel your inner mermaid with a dining experience under the sea and even enlist the divers to help with your proposal. Or, take your pick from horse drawn carriage rides, hot air ballooning or evening cruise trips next to the amazing fireworks displays. Mid-ride might not be the best option if you want to keep hold of that ring.
Santorini’s film-set scenery makes it the ideal setting for a special romantic escape. You’ve got pretty whitewashed villages, beaches in every colour and plenty of hidden coves and secluded spots to explore. Sunsets over Oia are pretty legendary, and if you bag yourself a table at a cliffside taverna, you’ll get a perfect view of the Aegean sea just as you pop the question.
The Burj Khalifa might be pretty tall, but only a plane will do for a sky high proposal. And, best of all, after he/she obviously says yes, you’ll have the rest of your holiday to celebrate sans nerves. Get the cabin crew in on the act to help you stage the surprise.
