In the Trentino region of Italy, Lake Molveno sits within the UNESCO-protected Dolomites. It’s the region’s deepest lake at 123 metres and has been voted the most beautiful lake in Italy a total of four times. With its glistening waters reflecting views of the striking mountain range, it’s easy to see why. Here are a few reasons why you should make Lake Molveno your next summer holiday destination.
Just steps from the lake, Molveno is a peaceful town filled with colourful houses and cobbled streets. It’s perfect
for sunny afternoons spent strolling and stopping at classic Italian cafés. You can pop into local craft and food shops selling Trentino specialities, from pots of local honey to cheeses and wines. When lunchtime rolls around, pay Pub La Botte a visit – its menu covers a huge range of pizzas made from local ingredients. Tuck into the four cheese doughy delight or opt for a simple but classic marinara pizza with tomato, garlic and basil.
Molveno is brimming with history and culture, so take the family to explore some of the town’s castles for the day. Explore the ancient walls and floral gardens of Thun castle, which dates back to the 16th century. You can walk around its collection of grand, stately rooms, furnished with their original furniture.
Or delve into Trentino’s history with a visit to one of Molveno’s museums. Go back in time at the Museum of Costumes and Traditions of the People of Trentino to discover how the people of Trentino used to live – you’ll see large mills at work, listen to music and learn about their religious traditions. If art is what you’re after, then head to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MART). It showcases a huge selection of art from some of Italy’s finest artists.
Tip: You’ll get a complimentary Molveno card with your holiday in Lake Molveno. This’ll get you discounts for museums and transport around Trentino.
In-between lazy days by the lakeside, take the scenic cable-car ride up to Pradel Plateau. At the top, you’ll find walking paths of different difficulties, each with beautiful views of the Brenta Dolomites. There are plenty of places to stop along the way called refuges, where you can rest your feet and grab some food to keep the tummy rumbles at bay.
Up for a challenge? Once you’re at the top of the Pradel Plateau, take the family to the Forest Park. High up in the pine trees, there’s a set of routes at different heights to test your agility and balance. And if the course gets your heart racing, head to the Educational Farm to wind down. You’ll spot cows, pigs, sheep and donkeys to name just a few and you can even pet these furry friends. The path will also take you to the milking area, so you can learn how the farmers make fresh milk and butter.
Right by Molveno town you’ll find the beach, where you can lay out your towel and sunbathe. Around the beach is 10 acres of green meadows, so you’ll have plenty of space to start up some ball games. You can also challenge the kids to a round of mini-golf, or let them blow off some steam in the nearby playground.
With the lake at your feet, give into temptations and cool off in the water. Take a refreshing dip or try something more adventurous and have a go at some watersports. Test your balance with stand-up paddle boarding, or rent a pedalo or canoe and enjoy the cool breeze off the water.
Aquapark, on the beach, is Lake Molveno’s waterpark. While the kids race each other down water slides and splash around in the pools and waterfalls, you can sunbathe on the wide lawn or swim lengths in the Olympic pool. You can even try something new and sign up to some of the aqua gym classes.
Hotel Alle Dolomiti Boutique – A family-run hotel and relaxing retreat at the foot of the Dolomites. You’ll get a private balcony that’s perfect for watching the sunset. You’ll have complimentary access to the extensive spa so you can unwind during the day.
