Where to stay on Lake Garda
The shores of Italy’s largest lake are dotted with lively towns, peaceful villages and a collection of accommodation to suit all – whether you’re looking for something authentic, contemporary or simply luxurious. Here are some of our favourites.
Hotel Luna, Sirmione
The family-run Hotel Luna sits in the pedestrian centre of Sirmione, just a couple of minutes from the lake – perfect for those who like to be in the thick of things. Enjoy breakfast in the stylish restaurant or out on the terrace, and then head out for a day of exploring. When you get back, order an apperitivo and unwind in the lounge or out on your room’s balcony.
Hotel Le Palme, Limone
Once a 17th-century villa, the Hotel Le Palme has retained its traditional charm and Venetian décor. Make the most of the lake views as you swim in the outdoor pool, laze in the whirlpools or sunbathe among the lemon trees. In the evenings, keep your cash in your pocket – your 4-course dinners include wine, beer and soft drinks. Afterwards, head to the bar to listen to live piano music.
Hotel La Perla, Garda
Mix fun and relaxation at La Perla, near the centre of Garda town. Completely refurbished in Summer 2018, the public areas and rooms have contemporary furnishings and cool pastel colours. All the rooms have a balcony too. Outside, you can splash around in the huge pool and kids’ pool, grab a drink from the pool bar and play games in the garden.
Hotel Oliveto, Desezano
A great value option, the Oliveto is a traditional hotel with modern touches. The highlight here is the big outdoor pool and peaceful private garden, surrounded by greenery and olive trees. Buffet breakfasts and 3-course evening meals are included with your stay – for lunch, you can stroll 15 minutes along the lakeside promenade to the centre of Desenzano.
Hotel Caesius Thermae & Spa, Bardolino
The Caesius is ideal for couples and families, with five outdoor pools and extensive gardens. Inside, the spa has another pool, plus a sauna, Turkish bath and menu of treatments. Meals are served buffet style, or you can treat yourself to an evening meal in the à la carte restaurant. If you want to get out and about, a 30-minutes stroll will take you to Bardolino, or you can hop on the free shuttle.
Hotel Villa Nicolli, Riva
The excellent staff add a special touch to the luxurious Villa Nicolli. When you’re not wandering around Riva – a 5-minute walk away – you can be swimming in the outdoor pool or indulging in the sauna, steam room and whirlpool of the Plein Air Spa. The bedrooms have elegant wood panelling, soft colours and stained-glass details. And the Vecchio Pozzo restaurant dishes up authentic Italian fare each evening, complete with homemade cakes.
