This 19th-century villa is decorated in classic Italian style and still has many of its original features. Head up to the rooftop balcony for uninterrupted views over Lake Como, or relax among landscaped gardens by the outdoor pool – you can eat breakfast out here on the terrace, too. For an extra special stay, upgrade to a deluxe room to soak up those lake views from your own balcony as well.
When you want to venture out, you’re just a stone’s throw from the water and a few minutes’ walk from Tremezzo’s shops, restaurants and ferry port.
Hotel Grand Gardone, Gardone Riviera, Italy

Grand by name and by nature, this graceful hotel’s hosted famous visitors from King George of Saxony to Sir Winston Churchill. The building was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and makes the most of its prime spot on Lake Garda – there’s a private lakeside promenade where you can take a stroll or enjoy a coffee and watch the world go by, as well as an outdoor pool and bar serving drinks and snacks.
Breakfast and dinner are taken in the main restaurant, where there’s also a weekly gala dinner to add to the great holiday experience. Or treat yourself and choose to dine à la carte in Il Giardino dei Limoni restaurant, which serves elegant dishes made with local flavours. And afterwards, head to the piano bar for cocktails, live music and dancing.
Du Lac et Du Parc Resort, Riva, Italy

On the northern shore of Lake Garda, this one’s ideal for a peaceful retreat. It’s set in its own extensive and beautifully maintained park, so you can wander among mature trees, shrubs and ornamental lakes. There’s also a great range of wellness and leisure facilities here – take time to unwind in the stylish spa or get a bit more active with things like sailing and cycling. And when it comes to the food, the weekly candlelit dinner is the perfect date night.

This is a great-value choice that’s nestled in the hills beside Lake Maggiore. It’s a pretty traditional hotel, with simple but spacious rooms that all have their own balcony. And outside, the secluded pool is surrounded by plenty of loungers for a few hours of relaxing. But the real highlight is the restaurant. There’s a huge variety at breakfast, with everything from cheese and eggs to pastries and cakes. And in the evenings, the four courses offer authentic Italian fare with a modern twist, and each dish is beautifully presented.

For a luxury escape, say hello to this 4-star, all-inclusive sanctuary. Relaxation’s the goal here, with a sleek outdoor pool connected to an indoor hydromassage area, and a spa with whirlpools and saunas too. Outside, there’s a sun terrace where you can just sit back and soak up the sunshine. The food is a real highlight too – breakfast is served until noon so you can take your time getting up in the morning, and then there’s lunch, afternoon snacks and 4-course evening feasts included. And stop by the bar throughout the day for a cup of tea, cold drink or cocktail.
The hotel’s in a quiet spot close to the village centre, so if you can bear to leave the indulgent facilities, you’re also in a great place for exploring.
Hotel Park, St Johann in Tyrol, Austria

One of St Johann’s leading hotels, the Park is all about that authentic Austrian experience, from the family-run service to the local food. And it wouldn’t be an Austrian hotel without a sauna, too. You can spend a few hours unwinding in the gardens with a spot of sunbathing. Or if you’d rather go exploring, pick up your packed lunch and head out. The hotel’s close to the village centre, gondola, bus stop and train station so you’re in the perfect location to see the surrounding area or go further out to visit some of the country’s lesser-known spots.
When you get back from your adventures, you can look forward to four courses of Tyrolean cuisine, from traditional soups and dumplings to hearty schnitzels and strudels – and there are weekly barbecues throughout the summer too.

This small, family-run hotel is known for its fantastic service and food. It’s got just 11 rooms, so there’s a real boutique feel and personal service is a priority. Although there aren’t many other facilities here, it’s home to one of the town’s best restaurants, which prides itself on serving regional specialities and pizzas made with fresh, local ingredients. You’re just a couple of minutes’ walk from Kranjska Gora’s centre, so you can spend your days out exploring the area, then head back to relax on the hotel’s terrace in the evenings.
Strandhotel, Interlaken, Switzerland

If it’s a Swiss getaway you’re looking for, check in to the Strandhotel. It’s in the pretty village of Iseltwald on Lake Brienz, a short boat ride from Interlaken, and the ferry stops right outside. There are spectacular views everywhere you look, and each room has a balcony overlooking the lake, too. When it comes to mealtimes, you can dine on fresh lake fish in the restaurant and join the regular summer barbecues out on the sun terrace, next to the water.
