With spectacular scenery, bucket-list cities and world-renowned wine regions surrounding Lake Garda, there’s plenty to explore. And the best way to see the highlights is on an excursion. Not only will a friendly local guide take you on a tour, you’ll get to eat local foods and travel in comfort while discovering incredible new places.
Here are our top picks of the excursions you can choose on a holiday in Lake Garda.
It’s no surprise that a lake tour is the most popular excursion on Lake Garda. Admire the ever-changing views along one of Europe’s most impressive drives and pass through tunnels chiselled into the rock. And you’re sure to feel like a James Bond star travelling down the east coast, which features in the fast-paced opening scenes of The Quantum of Solace. Stopping in several lakeside towns, there’s enough time to wander along the cobbled streets and lunch at a lakefront restaurant. You could even grab an ice cream along the promenade. It’s best to take this tour early in your holiday so you can return to your favourite place later on, or wrap up your Lake Garda experience and go towards the end – you might even find next year’s holiday spot.
Lake Garda – an area rich with wineries dotted across the hillsides. With row after row of vineyards basking in the summer sunshine, a wine tour is a must. Visit some of the area’s best cantinas and wander amongst the grapes, smell the wine-filled oak barrels resting in the cellar and learn about the process from grape to glass. And it wouldn’t be a wine tour without the chance to sip and savour some of the local wines.
There’s lots of history, delicately sculpted architecture and buzzing atmosphere in the cities near Lake Garda. Verona’s treasure trove of churches, tombs and roman bridges centre around the Verona Arena. During the summer months, you can take a special evening trip to see the Italian opera in the magnificent roman amphitheatre. Head west of the lake to the shopping paradise of Milan with its impressive cathedral. Or go east to Venice and take a gondola along the Grand Canal and explore the maze of narrow alleys and waterways that pass the Bridge of Sighs and the Doge’s Palace. For a truly memorable experience, stay until after dark on a Venice By Night excursion to see the city twinkling with cafés, boutiques and orchestral street performances.
It’s hard to imagine that the Dolomites were formed millions of years ago. Fossilised coral reef creates jagged peaks that tower high above green valley floors. And as the sun hits the mountainside, you’ll notice the distinctive warm glow of the rock. On an excursion to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll take a comfortable coach journey north and up into the heart of the mountains. Continue even higher using the cable car to the panoramic viewing platform to snap some photos, take a stroll, or grab a bite to eat from a traditional mountain restaurant.
