At the heart of the Switzerland’s Jungfrau region is Interlaken, a small town that sits between lakes Thun and Brienz at the foot of the captivating Swiss Alps. There are loads of things to do while on holiday in Interlaken – here are just three ways to spend your days here.
Start your day by the blue, glistening waters of Lakes Thun or Brienz. Lake Brienz is more popular for swimming, if you fancy a morning dip. Or, if you prefer, cool off around Burgseeli Natural Lido, known for its sunbathing meadow, barbeque facilities and warm waters. Enjoy lunch al fresco and admire the meadow, the mountains and the gliders floating in to land.
After lunch, stroll to Interlaken’s castle, a former 12th Century Augustinian monastery. And, if you’re after a little more culture, extend your walk to the ruins of Unspunnen and Rothenfluh castles.
As the sun goes down, head to Hotel Metropole’s rooftop restaurant, Top o’Met, for a pre-dinner drink. It’s perfect for a balmy summer’s evening, where you can unwind on the terrace with a glass of wine in hand, and admire night-time settling in over the mountains.
There’s nothing like fresh mountain air in the morning, so set off early and catch the Jungfrau Railway to the Jungfraujoch – known as the
Top of Europe. It’s roughly a 4-hour round trip, and you can spend a good couple of hours exploring the top. Marvel at the Aletsch Glacier and eat at one of the three restaurants for lunch…there’s even an Indian so you can enjoy your favourite curry at 3,450 metres.
If you have time when you’re back in town, take a stroll through Höhematte park. It has a clear view of the Jungfrau peak and you can pop into the 150 year-old Victoria-Jungfrau hotel for a coffee.
In the evening, see the lakes in a new light and book a boat cruise for an unforgettable sunset.
Tip: Make the most of the free Interlaken Visitor Card – it will get you various discounts and freebies, so you can get exploring for less.
If you’re feeling adventurous and itching to get out there, start your day by renting a kayak, pedalo or canoe. You’ll be able to take your own time to enjoy the mountain views, right on the water.
Paddle back to shore for lunch and, in the afternoon, take Europe’s oldest funicular up to the Grandhotel Giessbach and explore its beautiful surrounding waterfalls. Be sure to visit the hotel’s café and relax to sounds of rushing falls with a well-deserved piece of cake.
Before the sun sets, hop on the funicular up to Harder Kulm and take in Interlaken from 1,322m high. There are plenty of walking paths to explore while you’re up there and, if it’s still light, there’s the option to walk back down in time for dinner.

The oldest hotel in town, the Hotel Interlaken, has been renovated in chic, contemporary style with traditional charm. It’s near the resort centre and only a 5-minute walk to Interlaken Öst station, so it’s in the ideal location to get exploring. And prepare your palette for delicious Swiss meals in the hotel’s restaurants – they will continue to impress and have you coming back for more.
