From Moorish castles to tiny tapas bars, Catherine Roberts finds the beach town of Fuengirola has a few surprises up its sleeve…
The town of Fuengirola sweeps along Spain’s Costa del Sol. It’s got all the makings of a British-style resort – sea-view high rises, home-from-home bars, and a supersized beach.
While most visitors wander north along the beach – towards the stream of cocktail joints and terraced pizzerias – Spanish families make a beeline for Los Boliches’ sands. Fishermen perch on its suntrap jetty, while “pescaito frito” stalls sizzle with frying fish. Plus, waves kick up at the nearby marina, making it a hotspot for bodyboarders.
Away from the waterfront, lively squares are decorated with open-till-late fairgrounds and weekly markets. Meanwhile, skinny backstreets hide pocket-sized tapas bars. Reminders of the Costa del Sol’s Arabic past pop up all over the place –take the pretty tiled doorways, for one. Then there’s Sohail Castle, whose restored walls serve up widescreen views of the coast and mountains.
Loads of daytrips start from Fuengirola. A drive to Gibraltar covers the Apes’ Den and duty-free shopping. Tours of the Andalucian countryside mosey through villages and vineyards. Even Morocco is within grabbing distance – jump on a ferry to Tetouan, and you’ll be lunching on couscous and sticky pastries.
