Our Travel Editor spent a day exploring Khao Sok National Park in southern Thailand. Here’s her round-up of the day’s highlights…

    I visited…

Khao Sok National Park – a 739-kilometre expanse of rivers, tropical jungle and rubber tree plantations. It’s in southern Thailand’s Phang Nga province, where elephants roam freely along the roadside.

    I learnt…

that elephants can eat up to 250 kilos of food a day. That’s more than 12 times the weight of my suitcase! And I’m not what you’d call a light packer…

    I received…

a (very wet) kiss from a baby elephant named Jennifer Lopez. The name is thanks to her big wobbly behind!

    I watched…

while Jennifer Lopez curtseyed, showed us her best tricks, and happily massaged a tourist with her trunk.

    I rode…

this elephant, called Sawadee, through the forest and up a rocky brook. It was amazing but bumpy, and we were guided by a mahout (a special elephant trainer) called Puh.

    I tried…

canoeing along the 8-kilometre-long Pokok River. It’s edged by mountains, which are a lot higher than the clouds, so the trees that sprout from them are cocooned in a thick mist. I felt a bit like I was in Pocahontas, so sang a bit of Just Around The Riverbank to my boat buddy. He was really grateful.

    I ate…

steamed rice that came wrapped in a banana leaf, with barbecued chicken and battered prawns served with a sticky sweet and sour dip. For dessert, there was fresh pineapple and watermelon.

    I promised…

Jennifer Lopez I’d be back for more kisses next year. If you’d like to meet her, try your hand at elephant trekking, or unleash your inner Pocahontas in Khao Sok National Park.
