What does it take to be voted one of the World’s Top New Hotels by Conde Nast? Thomson’s Travel Editor heads to the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa to find out…

    1. Ridiculously comfy beds

Beds are a big deal at the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa. I slept like a log in this one – it was by far the comfiest thing I have ever climbed into. To recreate the feel back home, guests can buy the bedding on the Marriott website. I’ll be ordering pillows and a mattress topper as soon as I touch down in the UK.

    2. Supersized bathtubs

I sipped sparkling wine and flicked through my Thailand travel guide in this big bath tub (I filled it with bubbles first, though).

    3. The longest pool in South East Asia

Yes, I topped up my tan beside the longest pool in South East Asia. You can swim the whole way around it – it snakes under bridges, past sunny terraces and alongside the resort’s swim-up rooms.

    4. A private flower bath

I booked in for a long soak in this flower bath. It’s set in its own private courtyard right outside the tranquil Quan Spa.

    5. A lengthy room service menu

I ordered gourmet cookies from the room service menu.It was a couple of hours before dinner, so I only needed a snack. But I very nearly went for the buffalo mozzarella baguette. In fact, I could have spent hours choosing a proper meal – there was everything from Indian samosas to pad thai to choose from. And for dessert? Green tea crème brulee and apple crumble were both options. I’m coming back to work my way through the whole list…

    6. A great location

I ducked into this bar for a Chang beer and a bowl of nachos. Khao Lak’s town centre is just a 10-minute tuk tuk ride from the hotel, and it’s full of lantern-lit bars, bohemian clothes shops and Thai massage salons.

    7. A clutch of beachfront treatment huts

I braved a Thai massage in one of the hotel’s beachfront treatment huts. It cost less than a fiver for one hour, and I spent most of that time trying to decide whether or not I was in heaven or hell. If you’re a wimp like me, it can be a little painful in places, but it feels amazing afterwards. The hotel offers massage lessons if you fancy giving it a go yourself.
