Champagne lounges. Gourmet tapas restaurants. Sea-view spas. Catherine Roberts has cherry-picked some of our favourite top-shelf hotels on the Spanish coast…

    Gran Hotel Guadalpin Banus, Marbella

    Thomson A la Carte – 5T

The champagne giant Moët has put its stamp on this place. For starters, it designed the beachfront chill-out zone, where you can spend the afternoon sipping cocktails. Then there’s the Moët Pool Experience package. Snap up one, and you’ll get a just-for-two Balinese bed, a bottle of bubbly, and fruit kebabs to snack on. And it’s all within arm’s reach of the pool. Like the rest of the place, rooms look like they’ve come straight from the pages of Elle Decor magazine. Junior suites are the crème de la crème – think dark wood balconies, a cushy lounge area, and an über-modern kitchenette.

    Hotel Riviera, Benalmadena

    Thomson Couples – 4T

This place went from sleek to full-on chic in May 2013 with a top-class makeover. Rooms go boutique – think huge beds and chilled silver, grey, and white décor. Down by the raised pool, Balinese beds and paired loungers look out to sea. Plus, smoothie and tapas-making classes are held at the pool bar. Even the food is a cut above, with things like fruit-stuffed lamb and local sherry trifle on the à la carte menu. As for the in-house Nirvana Spa, the clue’s in the name. Expect massage rooms and an indoor pool with cinematic sea views.

Vincci Seleccion Estrella del Mar, Marbella

    Thomson A la Carte – 5T

Ornate glass lamps. Carved furniture. Sunny inner courtyards. This place has Moroccan-style chic down to a T. Its 3 pools are set over 3 tiers, and they’re framed by cushy loungers and star-shaped flower beds. A few minutes’ wander down the road is the Beach Club. You have to pay for entry, but that gets you access to an adults-only infinity pool and a VIP beach area. Then there’s the tapas restaurant. Channelling Cuban chic, it matches bright white sofas with cool-cat live bands. Oh, and the cocktail maestros shake up what are probably the best mojitos this side of Havana.

    Hotel Riu Nautilus, Torremolinos

    Thomson Platinum – 4T

The Hotel Riu Nautilus has just had a Sarah Beeny-style makeover. Lilac furnishings with silver trimmings are the theme – both in the bedrooms and the super swish lobby. And the refurb didn’t stop there – the spruced-up spa is now peddling treatments like cherry and chocolate body wraps. As for the summertime tapas restaurant, it’s semi al fresco, so the tables are treated to open sea views. Yes, please.
