As Thomson’s Director of Cruise, Fraser Ellacott is no stranger to a good port. But Sarah Holt discovers he’s fonder of a decent vodka martini when he’s on board…

The port everyone should see is…

Kotor in Montenegro. It’s stunning when you’re sailing in. It’s surrounded by high mountains, which you can go up into on excursions. One of the roads up to the top has about 26 switch-back roads, which gets the adrenaline going. The views of the bay from the top are amazing.

    My fantasy itinerary would be…

Havana, because I’ve never been and I imagine it feels like you’re going back in time when you visit. Aqaba, because I had such a good time there, visiting Petra and the desert. Rome, because there’s so much to do in one day. Kotor, because it’s beautiful. Then Spitzbergen, because I’d love to go to the Arctic and do some whale watching.

    When I’ve got a spare half-hour on board…

I go to the spa. My favourite massages are Thai. They take a bit of getting used to, but they are so good in the end.

The thing I can’t resist on the à la carte menu is…

lobster curry. We’ve just introduced this to the menu of our new à la carte pan-Asian restaurant on the Thomson Dream. I’d recommend it to anyone.

The cocktail I always order is…

vodka martini with a twist. I like really good vodka – Grey Goose for example.

The song I sing in karaoke is…

The Proclaimers’ I Would Walk 5,000 Miles. When I came to London from university I used to go to a big karaoke bar called the Gin Palace. Getting up to sing was natural in my twenties, but now I need to be goaded a bit more. It doesn’t take much to twist my arm, though, but I can’t say much for the singing.

The best thing about Thomson Cruises is…

the crew. They’re fantastic. Most of the feedback we get from customers is about how great the service is and how friendly the crew are.

The thing I’m most excited about for Thomson Cruises is…

that the Dream and the Celebration have just been turned into Platinum ships. The Celebration launches as Platinum this summer and we’ve got some exciting plans for the launch, but I can’t say what yet. that’s really exciting. Keep an eye out here on the blog and on our Facebook page.

The thing most people get wrong about cruising is…

that it’s for old people. I was guilty of thinking this for many years, too, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Experientially, and for enjoyment, nothing surpasses it, however old you are.

The one person I’d like to bump into on a cruise would be…

David Bowie. I was a massive fan when I was a teenager but I never got to see him in concert.

If I could name a cruise ship it’d be called…

either Sancerre or Rioja, after my favourite wines.
