New Years’ Resolutions are so last season. February is the month to give up giving up.
New Year’s Resolutions have a high mortality rate. By this time of the year, more than forty per cent of them will have kicked the bucket. And those that have managed to cling on are living on borrowed time. If you’re thinking of seeing off your own resolution, here’s how to do it in style…
For the non-smoker…
If you’re going to watch your smoke-free lifestyle go up in flames, you’ll get the best views from Cuba. After nickel, cigars are the country’s biggest export. In fact, there are more than 30 different varieties on sale on the island. The biggest brands include Monte Cristo, Cohiba and Cuaba. And if you can’t wait to unwrap your smoke, a few of the shops in Havana have smoking lounges. You’ll find some of the best ones around Calle Industria and Calle de Mercaderes.
For the teetotaller…
You can fall of the wagon in style at Sensatori Resort Mexico. More than 30 different types of mojito are shaken and stirred in the Mojito Lounge here. Knock your socks off with a ‘Bloody Extra Hot’ mojito, made with Tabasco sauce. Or get on your way to your five-a-day with a cranberry or a banana tipple. To kill two resolutions with one stone, head to the shisha bar here to smoke coconut and apple-flavoured tobacco through a pipe.
For the dieter…
Throw the diet to the wind in Naples. This fully-charged Italian city is the birthplace of pizza. Ask any local and they’ll tell you the big-name pizza brands in the UK take the name of pizza in vain. In Naples, pizza-makers known as pizzaiolos have to train for two years before they’re considered masters of their art. Il Pizzaiolo de Preseidente on Via Tribunali has one of the best reputations in the city.
For the budgeter…
The jewellery shopping opportunities in Santorini make breakfast at Tiffany’s look like a packed lunch in Primark. The main shopping street in Thira is nicknamed Gold Street for obvious reasons. The cabinets in the jewellery shops glow brighter than beacons at sea. And pieces from designer jewellery houses like Daum and Baccarat cosy up to bespoke Greek brands.
For the self-improver…
So, you’ve spent the past month learning how to parler Francais, and all you’ve got to show for it is the ability to ask the time or order a vin. If you’re ready to throw in the towel, book a flight to America. The Florida phrasebook requires you to learn a minimal amount of words. Repeat Key, Lime, and Pie several times in parrot fashion and you’ll be fluent in no time.
