One of our bloggers recently scoped out Cairo on a day trip, and soon realised the fast-paced city has some serious numbers on its side. Here’s what he found out…
Recently, I was lucky enough to put a tick next to ‘Visit Cairo and Giza’ on my bucket list. I was based in Sharm el Sheikh, and signed up to the Cairo by Air daytrip. A word of warning: if you’re following suit, you’re in for a long day (4am start and 9pm return), but I can assure you it’s totally worth it.
After a hop-and-a-skip flight from Sharm to Cairo, it was on to a coach where I thought about trying to play catch-up on the few hours of sleep I’d missed out on thanks to the pre-sunrise start. I chose to plough through with the aid of some ProPlus, though, because even just driving through Egypt’s capital is an experience in itself. The roads are notoriously busy – I found myself in my own world listening, eyes closed, to the cacophony of engine revs and horn blows.

But, believe me, it all adds to the city’s charm and appeal.
When I wasn’t taking in the chaotic metropolis out the window, I was listening to the narration of the expert Egyptologist assigned to show us around. The tour makes pit stops at some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, like the world-famous Egyptian Museum and the emblematic Pyramids of Giza. Our guide, a lovely chap named Mohi, nattered away passionately about his historical homeland, and dropped a fair few significant numbers into his ramblings. I grabbed my notepad and jotted down Cairo’s vital stats. Here goes…
