Thailand and honeymoons are a match made in heaven – think palm-fringed beaches, beautiful national parks and delicious cuisine. Even better, the land of smiles boasts great weather for most of the year, so it’s definitely worth the 12-hour flight after you’ve tied the knot. One of the best places to escape the crowds is in Khao Lak. It’s a two hour drive north of Phuket, and surrounded by bright-green jungle. The crystal-clear waters attract scuba divers from around the world, with up to 30 metres of visibility under the waves. Keep an eye out for marine life like turtles and eels. Plus, it’s just over an hour away from the Similan Islands, which are ideal for island hopping. There are four different isles to explore here, and you and your beau will tick off snorkelling around coral reefs, relaxing on white-sand beaches, and tucking into a traditional Thai-style lunch, before watching the sun sink. What more could you want?
If you’re looking to get off the beaten track on your honeymoon, why not hop on a plane to Mauritius? You’ll find it nestled in the Indian Ocean, around 1,200 miles from the east coast of Africa, boasting rainbow-tinted coral reefs, snow-white sands, and turquoise waters. But, that’s not all the Caribbean’s distant cousin has to offer newly married couples. Casela Nature Park is home to the longest zip-line in Mauritius. So, buckle up and whizz across the park, which is surrounded by thick jungle, forest-clad hills and towering mountain peaks. And, when it’s time to relax, look no further than the resort of Flic En Flac. It’s considered Mauritius’ top scuba diving and snorkelling spot – and don’t be surprised if bottlenose dolphins whizz past you as you dive below the surface.
Whether you’re relaxing in an infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean’s bright-blue waters or driving across a volcano, St Lucia has something for every kind of couple. The island’s sprawling luxury resorts offer world-class views and private pools perfect for romantic getaways, while the rainforests treat newlyweds to pulse-raising hikes and roaring waterfalls. Or, opt to explore the coastline, dotted with restaurants, seafront bars, and brightly-coloured villages. In Castries, explore one of the Caribbean’s oldest churches, and pick up souvenirs at the town’s marketplace. And, if you’re adrenaline junkies? Head for the Piton Mountains, or zip line through the jungle hand-in-hand.
Italy’s had thousands of year to work on its romantic credentials, so it’s an ideal spot for a close-to-home honeymoon getaway. If glitz and glamour are your thing, head to the Amalfi Coast. The region comes up trumps on impressive scenery, traditional Italian cuisine and unspoiled beaches, so it’s the perfect place to spend quality time with your partner. Amalfi Town has been awarded UNESCO status, thanks to its quirky hillside villages, Medieval architecture and a wealth of zesty orchards. Sorrento is another big hit when it comes to Italian honeymoon destinations. You’ll find it on the southwest coast of Italy’s stiletto heel, putting it in the centre of the Neapolitan Riviera. Plus, it’s worth visiting just for the dramatic views. Unobstructed vistas of Mount Vesuvius and Naples will leave you spoiled for choice when it comes to uploading those obligatory couples’ pics on Instagram.
