Beyond Sahara takes the festival experience to the next level. Alongside a stellar line-up of live music and DJ sets, there’s a packed-full itinerary of quirky activities. We’re talking stargazing, sandboarding, and sunset yoga. And, of course, this festival’s snapped up the ultimate location. Forget muddy fields in Somerset – this party’s hosted in the Sahara Desert. You’ll even arrive at the camp via camel convoy.
If the likes of Glastonbury and V Festival are too mainstream for you, you’ll love Bulgaria’s Meadows in the Mountains. Hidden away in the Rhodope mountains, this event is ideal for any hippie types. Thanks to its middle-of-nowhere setting, it’s easy to tune out every day stresses and worries – and your relaxation’s accompanied by the sounds of live soul, funk and folk music by day, and house DJs at night. When it comes to getting to the remote festival, you’ve got plenty of options. Choose between an airport shuttle, a taxi or, rather unconventionally, a horse and cart.
What better way to discover Iceland’s Reykjavik than getting to see world-class artists – the Foo Fighters and Prodigy are both past performers. And when you’re not watching some of your musical heroes perform, you’ll also find lagoon blowouts, midnight sun parties and glacier raves on the schedule, so you’ll never be bored. The festival takes place during the summer solstice, and boasts three days of 24-hour sunlight, – thanks to how close Iceland is to the Arctic Circle. And, if you’re wondering what the food is like in Iceland, we’ve got the guide for you.
This festival makes its home in the Cappadocian countryside, which is studded with ancient, towering rock structures. Locals call them fairy chimneys, so it’s no wonder there’s a magical feel to the whole affair. As well as watching plenty of music acts and DJs, you can get involved with guided walks around the festival’s surroundings, and gourmet food tasting sessions. Plus, if you want to chill out, regular yoga and meditation classes will help you find your Zen.
The Governors Ball on New York’s Randall Island is another festival with huge names on the line-up. Artists such as Eminem, Halsey, Shawn Mendes, and N.E.R.D are appearing at the three-day festival this year, so next year’s set list is sure to be a winner. The festival is also big on food, with access to gourmet grub from NYC’s tastiest establishments. And if you’ve had your fill of watching the musical acts on offer, you can have a go at ping pong, minigolf, a Silent Disco and a photo booth – plus loads more.
Benicassim always boasts an all-star selection of performers. With the likes of The Killers, Jessie Ware, and Chase and Status on the 2018 list, things can only get bigger and better for next year. The location’s ideal, as well. Nestled on the stretch of coast in between Valencia and Barcelona, Benicassim serves up the best of the Spanish seaside, alongside its standout soundtrack. The acts perform across four stages, and a nightly pool party keeps the festivities going into the early hours.
Since 1998, Julys in Tuscany have been soundtracked by the Lucca Summer Festival. This event has attracted big names from the get-go – Bob Dylan headlined in its first year. These days, the line-up’s filled by a mixture of genres, from pop and rock, to indie and electronic. The festival gives you the chance to explore the city of Lucca and its surrounding countryside, too, with its guided bike tours.
