There’s more to Mexico than beach breaks and glamorous Cancun. Here, you can explore ancient ruins during the day and party into the early hours. Or, trek through the jungle for lunch on the beach, and sail out to explore colourful coral reefs. You’ll find some of the best adventure holidays in the world here – but we’ve put together a list of excursions to suit everyone. So, whether you want to see history, culture, or just the local bars, read on to find out more.
If you’re an adrenaline junkie, Mexico’s got loads to keep you busy. On our Off-Road Adventure tour you’ll ride in a 4x4 over the rocky terrain and streams of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Deep in the jungle, you’ll stop at a traditional Mexican village to get a glimpse into the lives of the locals, before hiking through the jungle to the beach for lunch. Or, if that isn’t enough to get your pulse racing, try the Extreme Adventure tour. Practise your flying skills on a nine-rope zipline course which includes the famous Superman line – it stretches 1,200 metres in length. You’ll be in the driver’s seat in an off-road UTV, plus you can hike through the jungle before cooling off on waterslides. This trip will definitely keep you busy.

You can’t visit the home of tequila without ticking off Chichen Itza. These Mayan ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and other than Teotihuacan – known as the City of the Gods – are the closest thing to Egypt’s pyramids you’ll see in Central America. On this full day tour, you’ll learn about ancient Mayan history, culture, and legends from your guide, while exploring attractions like the Kukulkan Pyramid and Temple of the Warriors. And, if archaeological sites are your thing, try the Tulum Explore tour. You get a couple of hours to explore the ruins, as well as the chance to swim in a cenote. There are thousands of these natural underground pools around Mexico, each with their own story – and they make for a great Instagram shot.
Feeling inspired? Get more clued up on Cancun
If hitting the bars is at the top of your list of sightseeing activities, Coco Bongo is a great choice to see the scale of the show they put on. This Cancun-based hotspot blends a fiesta vibe with Las Vegas-style entertainment for a sensory experience like no other. And, with a Gold Member ticket, you’ll get a table complete with a waiter to bring your drinks. Meanwhile, for something a bit more low-key that still has the Cirque du Soleil feel, book tickets for the Rhythm of the Night excursion in Puerto Vallarta. You’ll cruise to Las Caletas where you’ll have dinner by candlelight, before watching acrobats and dancers perform the story of Mexico’s ancient civilisations.

If you’re staying on the Riviera Maya, you can snorkel and swim along Mexico’s Caribbean coastline on this Isla Mujeres Sailing tour. Dive in and you’ll spy all kinds of sea life hiding among the corals, before tucking into lunch. Or, make dinner plans at Xoximilco. On a trajinera – a flat-bottomed boat – you’ll feast on Mexican dishes to the sound of live authentic mariachi, bolero, and marimba music.

Swimming with whale sharks – the largest fish in the sea – is one of those wow-worthy, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Tick it off in Los Cabos on this Whale Shark Encounter tour. You’ll sail out into the deep blue with a marine expert – who’ll get you clued up on these gentle giants – before you don your snorkel and glide alongside them. Prefer a not-so-hands-on encounter? From December to April, you can hop on a hop on a Whale Photo Safari to spot humpback whales in Los Cabos’ surrounding waters. Thanks to the specialist onboard equipment, you can listen to them singing and communicating under the water.
