As anyone that’s visited the West African nation knows, Cape Verde is located smack dab in the middle of nothing. The 10-island archipelago is an isolationist’s dream come true, meaning that in addition to picture-perfect unpeopled beaches, you get an unencumbered view of the sky come nightfall. The remote islet of Boa Vista is particularly good for constellation-spotting, and there’s a three-hour tour that makes use of local experts and telescopes.

The Northern Lights are undoubtedly one of nature’s best light shows, and for a front-row seat, nowhere beats Iceland. For your best chance of catching the aurora borealis, take an excursion in the winter months, when the nights are longest. The Northern Lights are unpredictable, but they tend to go off anytime between 9pm and 2am. Get primed for them with a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa set in the lava fields outside Reykjavik.

Ever wondered what the sky would look like from Mars? Mount Teide National Park in Tenerife is a close approximation. The third-largest volcano in the world is surrounded by a landscape of lava that can’t help but look positively Martian. Join the Teide by Night sunset excursion and glimpse the explosion of reds and pinks that flicker across the craggy peaks as the sun goes down. Up at 7,000 feet, you’ll enjoy a glass of sparkly cava, dinner, and a professional guide who’ll explain the constellations in the sky as it darkens.

Morocco is a night owl’s paradise. Forget for a moment the fairy-tale quality that Marrakech promises in the evenings, with its low-lit, blush-hued buildings, maze-like souks and the majestic Atlas Mountains in the background. Delve further into those mountains, and you’ll be rewarded with what seems like an infinite expanse of desert. To take full advantage of the sky, spend the night in the Sahara with a two-day excursion that will see you camping, Bedouin-style, on carpets in the middle of sand dunes.

One of the best views in Europe can be found on the Costa del Sol in Spain. The location is a bit unexpected – it’s at the top of the cable car in Benalmadena. The 15-minute journey takes you to the highest point on the Malaga Coast, where on a clear day you can see all the way to Gibraltar and Africa. The best part is that in the summer months, the cable car stays open until midnight, and there are special stargazing activities. At the top, there is also a bar and walking paths so, if you’d rather, you can gaze at the night sky with a cocktail or a picnic dinner.

If you like your astronomy with a slice of adventure, than the Hurghada desert in Egypt is for you. The rough-and-tumble landscape demands a range of vehicles to cross it, and Thomson’s Ultimate Desert Experience lets you do just that. The excursion starts in the afternoon, when you’ll drive a quad bike over an assortment of terrain, from pancake-flat desert to rolling hills. Next up is a spider car – a kind of skeletal-looking 4x4, then a horse and camel ride to polish things off. The night ends with a dinner of traditional Arabic grilled meats, belly dancing, and a chance to take in the stars before being returned to your hotel.
