The best time to visit Cape Verde is between November and June – at this time of year, you can make the most of the white-sand beaches the islands are known for. The temperatures sit around the mid-to-high twenties, and there’s hardly any rain.
Located off the west coast of Africa, the Cape Verde archipelago has 10 islands, which include big names like Sal and Boa Vista, and lesser known spots like São Vicente and Santo Antão. Cape Verde’s year-round warm temperatures mean it’s ideal for winter getaways. But is that the only time you should head there for a break? We’ve got the answer. Make sure to browse our Cape Verde deals to get booking…
You’ll need to visit Cape Verde in late autumn or early winter to experience the best climate. The average temperature at this time of year sits in the high 20s, and there’s not much rain. Plus, similar to the Canaries, the heat won’t feel overpowering because of Cape Verde’s breeze. Visit during November and December to make the most of the turquoise waters and Caribbean-like beaches, explore the local markets, and hike up Cape Verde’s mountains.
Like all tropical climates, Cape Verde has a rainy season. Expect it on the islands from July to October – although September is one of Cape Verde’s warmest months, it also sees the heaviest rainfall. However, showers are likely to be short and sharp, and make the landscape green and healthy after months of powerful sun. So, summer is still a great time to visit.
Cape Verde’s autumn winds make November one of the best times of year for watersports enthusiasts. Windsurfing, sailing, and surfing are all on the cards, plus scuba diving and sea fishing. These conditions continue into the spring, when sea temperatures start to warm. There’s also up to 10 hours of sunshine a day in March, giving you plenty of chances to get out and make the most of the waves.
When: February or March
Get a taste of Cape Verde’s cultural history at the annual Shrove Tuesday celebration, which blends Portuguese vibes with Brazilian carnival celebrations. Watch brightly dressed dancers and extravagant floats make their way through the town of Mindelo. As the celebration is linked to Easter, the date can change each year, so make sure to check before you book your trip.
When: July
Celebrating the patron saint of the island Boa Vista, the festival is Cape Verde’s biggest celebration. Watch local processions and horse races, see swimming competitions, and dress to impress at the annual public ball.
When: September
Head to Sal for this annual music festival in Santa Maria. Expect live music and entertainment, plus food stalls for tasting local cuisine. Both tourists and locals to the islands pitch tents on Santa Maria Beach for the weekend.
