Toulon’s home to the biggest naval base in Europe, and you’ll get a good look at it on this cruise around the city’s bay. You’ll meet your guide at the port and head to a nearby marina, where a boat will be waiting for you. Sit back and take in views of the ship graveyard, where old vessels are decommissioned and recycled. You’ll be able to see some bigger, state-of-the-art destroyers and other navy ships, as well. From here, you’ll sail to La Seyne sur Mer – home to the 17th-century waterfront castle, Fort Balaguier. It was originally built in 1673 to protect the harbour from Dutch invaders. Lastly, you’ll pass by Lazaret Bay, which is famous for its mussel farms. Shellfish has been produced in this part of France since the 19th century. You’ll then point the rudder back towards the port, passing a handful of 400-year-old seaside fortresses on the way. When you dock, you’ve got the choice of returning to your ship, or spending some free time exploring Toulon’s city centre.
