This half-day tour takes you to one of Tuscany’s most handsome and historic towns. Lucca is packed to the rafters with Medieval architecture and tell-tale signs of Roman ancestry. Your guide will drive you to the outskirts of the old quarter, which is wrapped in a fortress-like curtain wall. After a few tips on what to look out for, you’ll head out exploring by yourself. Head for Piazza dell’Anfiteatro – the site of a Roman amphitheatre – and you’ll see terracotta-topped townhouses built in the exact shape of the former arena. Elsewhere, a Romanesque cathedral dominates St Martin’s Square. It’s just around the corner from the childhood home of legendary opera composer Giacomo Puccini. Or, to see the town from every angle, walk around the top of the ring-like Renaissance walls.
