You’ll be a local expert by the time this half-day tuk tuk tour of Cochin’s over. At the port, you’ll get on a bus for a 30-minute drive to Fort Kochi, an old district of Kerala city with lots of stories to tell. When you arrive, you’ll hop in a tuk tuk for a tour of the area, which started life as the first European settlement in India. You’ll pass by massive colonial mansions and rustic bungalows, before paying a visit to St Francis Church. It was built in 1503 by Portuguese settlers, making it the oldest European church in the country. Once you’ve taken a few photos, you’ll then head to the Vasco Da Gama Square beachfront promenade to see the Chinese fishing nets. Here, the clock’s turned back to traditional times, as local fishermen cast out big square nets hung up on tall bamboo poles. Your next stop’s in Mattancherry, the Jewish quarter, for a spot of shopping. A lot of the centuries-old houses here have been turned into boutiques selling spices, antique masks, jewellery and handcrafted clothes. When you’re finished, you’ll get back on the bus for a drive through town back to the port.
