You’ll hit the water today, as you get to know the Mekong Delta. This sprawling maze of rivers, swamps and islands covers the huge chunk of land south of Ho Chi Minh City. It’s home to rice paddies and back-to-basics villages – and you’ll get to tick both of these off as you glide along its canals. You can barter for fresh coconuts, pumpkins and watermelons in Cai Be. Next, you’ll get to see local families making rice paper or farming fruit. You’ll need to switch to an even smaller boat – or a sampan – for the next bit, as you make your way down the tiny, fruit-fringed tributaries to see the local waterfront villages. After you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll get to sample traditional eats from the area – think deep-fried river fish, sticky rice balls and pomelo fruit salad with pork and prawns.
The journey time is approximately 3 hours each way. Sensible footwear is recommended as there is a fair amount of walking involved in this tour and boarding the smaller boats can be a bit wobbly. There is also a height and weight limit of 2.2m and 150kgs to take part in this excursion.
- SUITABILITY Moderate physical activity.
