One of Mangalore’s most history-filled sites tops the agenda on this trip. You’ll start, though, with a visit to the sky-scraping statue of Gomateshwara. This massive monument has been around since the early 1400s, and it stretches more than 50 feet into the air. Once you’ve craned your neck and grabbed a few keepsake shots, you’ll pay a visit to Soans Farm. Lunch will be served in view of the pineapple plants and rambutan trees, and you’ll get a tour of the grounds. Last up’s the main attraction – Moodabidri – a place dubbed by some locals as ‘temple town’. There are 18 dotted around the place, and you’ll be visiting the leader of the pack – the Thousand Pillars Temple. Its name tells you all you need to know, and the intricate carvings inside are impossible to take your eyes off. Once your tour’s over, you’ll head back to port.
Shorts and skirts aren’t allowed at sacred sites. Women have to cover their shoulders, too, and you’ll need to take off your shoes before entering the temples.
- SUITABILITY Moderate physical activity.
