If you want to cover off the best of Cochin but you only have half a day to look around, this trip is for you. You’ll take a two-hour walking tour through the time-stamped streets of Fort Kochi. This Keralan region was once a thriving trading port, and it’s been shaped by seafaring visitors over the years. A flood in 1341 threw open the river estuary at Kochi and turned it into one of the finest natural harbours in the world. Your guide will explain how the area has changed hands between the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British through the centuries, and how it became home to 13 different cultures. You’ll pass sights like the Chinese fishing nets along Vasco Da Gama Square, and have a go at operating one of them, before moving on to the Bastion Bungalow. It was built in the 16th century and is one of the oldest buildings in Kerala. You’ll also get to go inside the first European church in India, St Francis. Before returning to the ship, you can tuck into cookies with tea and coffee at Fort Cochin Hotel.
You’ll need to cover up and remove your shoes when visiting St Francis Church, and you won’t be able to record videos inside.
