On this daytrip, you’ll leave Cochin behind and take a coach ride through the countryside to Kumbalangi village. Here, you’ll swap bus for boat and cruise along the backwaters that connect the village to the interlocking waterways of Kerala. As you bob along the water towards Kallancherry Island, look out for fishermen casting their nets from the banks. Only 500 people live on the pocket-sized island of Kallancherry, and most of them make a living by fishing. As a result, the island is haloed by rows of cantilevered Chinese fishing nets. You can watch the locals processing coconut and netting crabs before visiting a local farm. Here, they grow everything from coconut and nutmeg to teak and pepper trees. After, a host family will serve up traditional Kerala snacks, bound to tickle your taste buds. The coaches will be parked up just outside the village, so you’ll travel the first part of the return journey in a tuk tuk.
You’ll need to dress modestly for the village visit. No alcoholic drinks will be served with lunch.
