This half-day trip will see you swapping cruise ship for motorboat to sail around Cochin’s natural harbour, which is home to a cluster of islands connected by ferries and bridges. You’ll pass the islands of Vypeen, Gundu, Vallarpadam and Bolgatty along the way. The Colonial traditions of Cochin stand in direct contrast to the modern city of Ernakulam on the other side of the water, which has tall buildings and plenty of hustle and bustle. You’ll disembark at Ernakulam Marine Jetty and pay a visit to a market selling fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. This will give you a feel for how the locals shop, and you’ll sample some bananas, before you wander along shop-lined Broadway. Here, you can buy everything from spices and clothes to jewellery and handicrafts.
It’s recommended that you dress modestly for this tour. You’ll be doing a fair bit of walking, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes. If your ship calls at Cochin on a Sunday, the shops along Broadway will be closed, but street vendors set up stalls on the roadside, instead.
- SUITABILITY Moderate physical activity.
