Head to the waterfront in Isafjordur, and you’re ready to head out in search of the local population of whales. You’ll be given warm overalls and a life jacket before you board a RIB – a type of speedboat – and skim out into the fjords. It’s important to wear warm footwear, headgear and gloves, too, as you’ll be out on the water for a while. Your skipper will find a spot in Iceland’s biggest fjord, Isafjardardjup, and keep watch on the surface for humpback and beaked whales. Snow-capped coastlines and pretty Vigur Island provide a scenic backdrop, and you’ll occasionally see seals close to the shoreline.
