The second-largest city in the Dominican Republic’s your destination for today. Meet Santiago de los Caballeros – nicknamed ‘Heartland City’. You’ll begin with a visit to the country’s oldest cigar factory, to see the master craftsmen at work. The next stop will be the Centro Leon Cultural Centre, which houses first-class exhibitions on Dominican culture. After lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll call in at the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration. It’s dedicated to those who fought in the 19th-century Dominican Restoration War, and sits high on a hill overlooking the city. You’ll clock great views of the mountains, too.
