Like the idea of exploring Rome’s top sights at your own pace, without the need to worry about finding your way between each one? This trip includes four different stops at some of the most beautiful attractions in the Italian capital, dubbed the ‘Eternal City’ because of its lengthy history. A local guide will be on hand during bus transfers between each site. They’ll give you a map and let you know about the meeting times. The first stop is Vatican City, a teeny city-state within Rome that the Pope calls home. You’ll have some free time to see the famous St Peter’s Basilica, a distinctive Italian Renaissance church at the centre of a grand piazza. This area is also where you’ll find the circular tower of Hadrian’s Mausoleum and the pretty Sant’Angelo Bridge. The second drop-off point is at the top of Giancolo Hill, where you can see for miles over Rome’s rooftops. And the third stop is by the Colosseum. This huge mass of arches and columns once held crowds of up to 50,000 people who came to watch the gory gladiator battles in action. During the next transfer, you’ll pass by the 5th-century Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore on your way to the Spanish Steps. This iconic stairway is in a popular shopping area, close to the Trevi Fountain. Here, you’ll have two hours’ free time to see the sights, hit the shops or just sit back in a café and watch the world go by.
