Lopesan Baobab Resort
With its lagoon pools and safari-lodge styling, this luxury hotel brings a taste of Africa to Gran Canaria.
Walk around the jungle-like gardens of this African-themed hotel and you’ll find no fewer than seven pools. There are four restaurants, too – including a great African place – plus a clutch of bars offering live shows and cocktails.
The hotel is just behind Meloneras’ promenade, about 5 minutes’ walk from one of the area’s most famous landmarks – the Maspalomas lighthouse. The beach, meanwhile, is about 10 minutes on foot.

Just back from weeks stay here and thinking about our holiday which had its moments. Clouds for 4 days cant do anything about that but lovely beach and sand dune walks to be had. Hotel had a spectacular entrance and warm welcome. Had unique experience stay gorgeous breakfast and quiet poolside and wee extras in lounge which was nice. Room was clean and big and evening buffet was interesting and tasty but ate down beach as well to break up stay. Our wee girl loved the kids club and disco with friendly girls working there. Only issue as highlighted by others was pool water temperature was too low for kids to enjoy so didnt benefit from this. Evening music was chilled and relaxed. Meloneras nice place for those looking sun with no neon lights thumbs up😎More
got its faults. Massive hotel with 7 pools and with an African theme all the way through the hotel and grounds. The staff are very polite and work very hard, it's spotlessly clean and there's always someone cleaning up. The food as a vast choice and is nice but the theme nights didn't vary that much. It's in a great location and only 5 minutes to the sea front with nice bars and restaurants. The only things we weren't happy with is sunbeds with towels on and rarely used and some people having 4 sunbeds for 2 of them so no one can sit either side of them, down right rediculous. The other thing is how dimly lit it is at night especially on the stair ways but all in all a good hotel.More
Gorgeous week spent at this beautiful place. The gardens are stunning and it feels like a tropical oasis. We were a bit worried about the family theme as we usually go adults only but this wasn’t a problem at all. Lots of sun-beds but some people still felt the need to reserve beds with towels. Thank goodness that the hotel are actually alerting guests and removing those on unoccupied beds. The staff were excellent and everywhere was spotless. We had half board and found lots of choice and good quality. Lots of bars and shops about 10mins walk to the lighthouse. We ate at the African al a carte restaurant and want to say thank you to Carlos for a fabulous meal. We don’t often return to the same hotel but we could make an exception for this place. We do think that things like the safe and WiFi should be included in a 5star and the pools could be a bit warmer but that didn’t spoil our winter sunshine break. More
Lovely resort with wonderful staff, shame about the room noise
This is my second stay at the Baobab, I was there in 2014 in a couple rather than as a family. The resort is lovely, the African theme gives it a luxurious feel and the outdoor spaces are gorgeous, there are even turtles for little ones to look at. The food here has always been very good, buffets can get boring after a while but we found there was enough choice for us and our three year old every night. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice (although it could do with some proper fresh orange juice and better coffee). The staff are so sweet here and were so welcoming to our small son. The children’s pool had slides and other fun things to play on, the kids club seemed busy every day but we didn’t use it. Some downsides - off season the pools are extremely cold even though they are apparently heated, this is a real problem as many people are going to the Canaries in the winter for some warmth! I did take the plunge but I couldn’t stay in the pool long. The biggest gripe for me is the thin walls, others have noted this. We had a newborn baby in the room next door which cried constantly. I have a child myself so I appreciate this isn’t the baby’s fault! It’s just that the walls are so ridiculously thin you can hear everything to an amplified level. Sadly we won’t return because of this, it’s a lovely hotel but it’s just too noisy.More
Best in high summer
We stayed here for New Year just past. Location is perfect and the staff work hard to make the experience good, but for us the resort did not live up to its 5 star billing. First of all, we have to make allowances for the fact that we were there for a Winter sun break and this resort probably works better in high Summer. It's like Jungle Book meets Out of Africa and the typically windy cooler weather of the Canarian Winter gave it a wildness. The resort is a favourite of families and children clearly love it. But given that this is quite a large resort, it should be possible to manage the experience for couples too. There are lots of pools but some are exposed and not great when the breeze picks up. The river pool allows for swimming laps which my husband enjoyed. The food is excellent but the ambience in the restaurants could be better managed. We were told the Marula was quieter than the main restaurant, but on our last evening, we found ourselves in the middle of what felt like a creche, with a crying baby on one side and children running back and forth to the buffet table on the other . There are 2 other restaurants one of which we tried and that did allow a better ambience for dining but the price was not included in our half board package. Therefore I would recommend going out of the resort if you want a break from the buffet. The food offerings themselves were superb and I particularly loved the Italian night. Also the New Year dinner was great with complimentary wine. More
