Everything you need to know !
Firstly, every 5 star review that you’ve read about this hotel is absolutely true! I have stayed in a few 5 star hotels in my time and they all wish that their customer service was as good as this hotel. They all seemed to be genuinely nice people who did their best to make you feel welcome and at home. Even the cleaner was super friendly and very efficient. Like most of the other 5 star reviews, we would agree that the hotel is immaculately clean and the food is great. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis with easy jet and we had a private taxi from the airport to the hotel which takes over an hour. If you’re getting there by coach then it will take a lot longer. Everything in Sorrento is not cheap so be prepared to spend a little more than you usually would. We had lunch at the hotel on many occasions. Lunch would typically cost about €30 for a family of four . This would include a bottle of water (enough for 4) and the kids would share a main with some chips (chips are €6 per portion) On an evening we looked at trip advisor and ate at the restaurants in the top 20 . Expect to pay between €68-€80 for a family of 4 which would include two glasses of wine and a starter for adults. I would highly recommend ristorante il Cantuccio . The restaurant is in the garden of a Roman villa, perched on a cliff overlooking Capri. We had a wonderful family meal here whilst watching the sunset over Capri. There is a free taxi that will pick you up from the hotel and drop you back off. Ask about it at the reception as they recommend it to us. The gala night is a must and was one of the many highlights of the trip. The napkin waving was great fun 😂 We did not book any excursions and did it all ourselves. The hotel is in an excellent location. We would catch the free shuttle bus into town and then jump on a train or the hydrofoil to explore further afield . Capri We caught the hydrofoil from the Porto in Sorrento. It costs €20 per adult each way and €12 for children each way. A good tip is not to book a return ticket as you are then governed by what time you have to leave, just buy a single to get there and then when your ready to come back, purchase a ticket at the marina in Capri but be sure to check what time the last ferry leaves. They run every 20-30mims. Once you’re in Capri head over to the funicular cliff train which will cost €16 for a family of 4 for a return. Total cost to get to Capri €144 compared to €74 pp as a tour .....if I’m being honest though . I didn’t rate Capri, it was jammed packed with tourists and everything is very expensive -€8 for a bottle of water 😱. If you like paying over the odds for stuff and you’re Chanel etc then give it a go . Pompeii This was by far our best day out and was fascinating. We caught the shuttle bus down to Sorrento and caught the train to Pompeii Scavi. The train stops right outside the entrance. The train cost €20 for all of us and they run pretty frequently. Purchase your tickets for Pompeii online and you will skip the queue which is more than an hour long if you haven’t pre paid online . We also did a private tour as they tout up and down the lines asking if anyone is interested. We picked Leno who charges €15 per person and if you haven’t booked online he can take you straight to the front of the queue as he has special access. Entrance to the site will cost you €43 for a family of 4 and the tour is worth every penny. The audio guide is pants - don’t bother!! The private tour lasts two hours and this is more than enough. On a final note this is fantastic hotel and well worth its great trip advisor rating. Thank you to all the staff at La solara for making special memories that will last a lifetime 👍. We simply cannot fault this hotel. You may find somewhere a bit more swanky but I don’t think you will find a better or friendlier service, staff you recognise every day & delicious food. No problem finding a sun lounger by the pool, no need to reserve your spot at 5am, a very relaxed atmosphere. I would happily book to return next year immediately, we loved our stay. The location is perfect, the shuttle into town I think is preferable to staying in the centre. I hope we return before too long! More
Good Hotel just outside of Sorrento
My wife and I stayed at the Best Western Hotel La Solera, Sorrento for a week, returning one week ago. The La Solera is a nice, but not exceptional hotel offering reasonable value for money (we booked a TUI late deal). The rooms are very comfortable rooms and are kept spotlessly clean (as is the rest of the hotel) by the housekeeping staff which would be a credit to any 5 star hotel. For a four star hotel, there were some minor disappointments compared to other 4 star hotels across Europe. There was no complimentary bottled water in the room (although you could purchase them from the mini bar), no slippers or bathrobes. This is unusual these days in a 4 star hotel. There was however plenty of hanging and drawer space in the room and unusually the room we stayed in had both a bath and over-shower, catering both for those who prefer a bath and those who prefer showering. Towels are changed every day. The hotel (or Best Western as a group) should consider the impact upon the environment of this practice as most hotel guests don’t need their towels changed so often. By giving guests the option of when their towels (or even their bedding is changed) can help reduce the environmental impact of cleaning laundry and also help reduce hotel running costs. The food, I guess was a bit of a Marmite test (you either love it or hate it). Choices across breakfast and the evening meal was in my view limited, and the buffet (it was all buffet for breakfast) and of an evening they had a 'salad bar', needs far better labelling both across the breakfast buffet and the evening salad buffet. Some items were labelled but at least 50% weren't, leaving guests guessing as to what exactly the item was or whether it was suitable for vegetarians etc. Of an evening the menu was very pasta and fish heavy. You may argue that this is typical in Italy, but if you removed the pasta or fish choices you were left with very little choice. The evening meals consisted of a choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts. The wine menu was reasonably extensive and reasonably priced. Plenty of choice in the 16-20€ bracket, although there were wines available in the 45€+ bracket if you fancied something a little more expensive. English newspapers were available daily in the lounge. Gala night which takes on a Sunday evening for me was a bit of a disappointment. The four course set meal served at 7:30 p.m. took 1.5 hours before the main course was served at 9:00 p.m. Wine/bottled water had to be ordered the previous evening, but to be honest I have no idea why as it wasn't delivered until after you were seated and with all hotel guests dining at the same time, this took a while. The portion sizes of the two prior courses was to large and wasteful. The Parma Ham with Cantaloupe Melon & Wild Salad could have served a family of four, and the Ravioli Alla Caprese with Fresh Tomato & Basil was more of a main course than a starter. In reality, the main course should be the star not one which guests are too full to eat. During this 'Gala' evening the service in the restaurant at times appeared a little chaotic and disorganised both in terms of the order in which tables were served and in the lack of cutlery. Eventually it took two hours for an uninspiring meal.More

Relaxing week at the Hotel La Solara Sorrento
Returned from a week in Sorrento staying at the Best Western Hiotel La Solara. Our first time at the hotel I have to say that it lived up to the positive reviews we had read prior to booking. The hotel provides a picture perfect view out over the bay of Naples and the sunsets are stunning. The hotel is clean and all the staff there work exceptionally hard to make sure that your holiday is made special. On arrival we had been allocated two rooms with huge terraces looking out to sea. Whilst we were there it was our sons birthday and without asking the restaurant staff had made him a birthday cake and presented it at the table at dinner complete with a candle and the head waiters Marcello and Nello singing happy birthday. It is this attention to detail by the staff that makes this hotel different. The food was excellent and varied providing good alternatives for my son, who is vegetarian. The hotel is a little way out of Sorrento but there is a free and regular stuttle bus provided into the centre. This runs on the hour up to 23.00hrs. It is possible to walk to Sorrento but somewhat risky due to the lack of pavements on what is a busy road. Overall the hotel is clean, well run and provides a excellent retreat to fully relax or if preferred to use as a base to visit the whole area. Again special thanks to all the staff at the hotel for making this hotel stand out for its hospitality, nothing was too much trouble. Would recommend and may have the opportunity to return again .
