The island of Gotland lies just off the south-east coast of Sweden. Its capital city, Visby, has been dubbed the ‘Town of Roses and Ruins’, thanks to its wraparound Medieval walls and abundance of blooms. This tour of the city starts off with a scenic drive along the coast. Expect spectacular views of the city’s terracotta rooftops and the Baltic Sea from the clifftop roads. You’ll drive to the area of Almedalen, the site of the Hanseatic Harbour and the Kruttornet tower – the oldest remaining building in Visby. Then, you’ll stop by the city’s Botanical Gardens for a chance to stretch your legs. ‘Jungfrutornet’, otherwise known as, ‘Maiden’s Tower’, is next on the itinerary. It’s so-called because, according to legend, a goldsmith’s daughter was buried alive in its walls as punishment for treason. The last part of your tour is on foot. You’ll explore the narrow, winding streets with your guide, stopping by the imposing Cathedral of St Mary and the ruins of the Medieval church.
You’ll get a great feel for the island of Gotland today, as you explore its rugged interiors and Medieval capital. The trip kicks off with a coach ride across the pea-green countryside. You’ll pass through farming areas before making a stop a Medieval church – one of the best examples of architecture from the era. After a scenic drive along the coast you’ll stop by ‘Gannarve Skeppssättning i Fröjel’, an ancient burial ground that’s said to date back to the Bronze Age. Tombstones are lined up around the burial area in the shape of a ship, and historians believe it’s to symbolise the journey of the dead to the afterlife. Once you’ve had time to explore, you’ll make your way to Visby along the island’s clifftops, pausing en route to soak up the scenery in a pretty fishing village. The capital has been nicknamed ‘The Town of Roses and Ruins,’ thanks to its enveloping walls and climbing rose bushes. You’ll have a guided walk through the cobbled streets, before making your way back to the port.
Gotland is full of picture perfect moments – vast, open countryside, age-old fossils and rare flowers are just some of the things that characterise this island off the coast of Sweden. And today, you’ll get to appreciate the scenery of this magical island on this easy going tour. It begins with a drive through the town of Visby. Gotland’s capital city is cocooned by wraparound Medieval walls and has a history that spans 7,000 years. Passing the impressive cathedral, flower lined avenues and ancient ruins, you’ll start to understand why Visby is nicknamed the ‘City of Roses and Ruins.’ Leaving the town behind you’ll head out to the green wonderland that is the Gotland countryside. With plenty of stops along the way, you’ll discover one of the many medieval churches that are dotted around the landscape. And you’ll visit the imposing Bronze Age burial ground at “Gannarve Skeppssättning”. Here a group of stone slabs, all standing on their edges, form the shape of a ship. The final stop will be at the top of the Högklint cliffs. From here you can admire the views covering the coast of Gotland, so don’t forget your camera.
