The National Gallery Public Display System

Tui worked with The National Gallery London and software supplier Scala BV to develop an exciting new public information display service, which will be launched throughout the Gallery at the opening of the East Wing.

Delivered via large NEC plasma screens and Scala software, this innovative new service combines strong design, iconic paintings and powerful technology to provide visitors with useful information, setting a welcoming tone for their visit and introducing highlight paintings from the permanent collection.

The design of the information display is elegantly simple. The screen is divided into two squares that form the building blocks of the screen composition and the layout of the information. Gallery typography, signage and colourways are used with emphasis placed on clarity and legibility. Tui produced short video sequences featuring the highlights of the collection, derived from the Gallery's high-resolution digital scans of the paintings. The video was encoded to be pixel perfect with the high-resolution screens and provide better than DVD quality and image stability.

The service uses Scala InfoChannel software to allow the information to be easily and regularly updated by Gallery staff, facilitating network distributed, zoned and scheduled playback. Ease of maintenance is further enhanced by Tui's provision of comprehensive online design guides and templates.

The development benefited from Tui's process of prototyping, focus group analysis and re-assessment, which ensured the service has a strong visual impact while remaining sympathetic to the Gallery and easy for visitors to read and understand.
